AYLA Waiting Video Clip
I recently shot the video clip for AYLA’s new song called Waiting. Ayla is an extremely talented singer/songwriter from Brisbane who is making major waves in the music scene. At only 19 she’s secured regular air time on JJJ and her latest single “Waiting” will further secure her as one of Australia’s most exciting emerging talents.
We filmed the entire clip in one day, starting at dawn on the rocks at Freshwater beach and finishing up with driving shots on Parramatta road late at night; it was a huge day and included a restaurant and bar location which had to be lit along with a night scene in front of a house in Leichhardt.
We were completely exhausted by the end of the day, including Ayla, who had to be in make-up before dawn and then perform in freezing cold weather wearing a thin summer dress, but it was worth it in the end as the clip came up a treat.
I shot it all on the Black Magic Cinema Camera with the assistance of the awesome Joe Hell who operated on the Ronin rig. We had a 2×4 bank Kino, a Dedo 400, a couple of day light LED’s and a china ball. Not much to shoot a clip with but we didn’t have the or crew time for elaborate setups so we had to keep it simple. It’s amazing how limitations with lighting and time constraints forces you to be creative on the run.
The clip was graded by Keiran Lee who is a colour grader at Animal Logic and the falling rose petals were added in After Effects by Gavin Tyrell. The overall effect is a sweet, moody clip that I hope captures the feelings of this very talented musician and her song.
