Skybaby Siren Clip

Skybaby Siren is a Sydney band you probably haven’t heard of but should be listening to. The musical creative outlet for Craig Beck & Friends, whose influences include The Church and Echo & The Bunnymen.  When asked to pick a genre they chose Alternative, Sonic, Rock ,Pop, Electro.

Just before Christmas (2015) I teamed up with Craig to make a video clip for the song I Love Everything About You. I directed and dp’d this clip on the Arri Alexa, using a set of wonderful of old Cook Speed Panchro lenses (special thank you to Hugh Miller for lending me his ancient lenses).

We had a bunch of different looks for different parts of the song, so all the verses were done in black and white and have more of contrasty look. The first chorus has a 70’s Kodachrome grade and the second chorus has more of a saturated 60’s Mad Men feel. The Kodachrome look has a bit more contrast and saturation than the 60’s look. Finally the breakdown in the middle has an Instagram hipster look with over blown colours and a light leak.

The locations were all in studio at Sydney Props in Marrickville where we found some really cool little sets with old wall paper and retro furniture. Sydney props keep expanding their studios which is awesome because the spaces come with really interesting props. I had to keep the lighting pretty simple as we were churning through the shots in an attempt to shoot the clip in just a day (a day that ended up finishing at 2am). We were able to pick a space for each look, so the black and white and a large open room with a chase lounge and chandelier, and the two retro looks each had their own rooms with retro wall paper and old furnishings.

The shots where Elia is singing to camera were all shot at 60fps and everything else was either at 100fps or 120fps. The clip was edited on Adobe Premier Pro and graded on Davinci Resolve.
